Sparta (Sparti or Σπάρτη) is a municipality of Laconia, Greece. It lies at the site of ancient Sparta, famous for its warrior culture and history. The population in 2001 was 18,184, of whom 14,817 lived in the town itself. The current town of Sparta was designed in the 1800’s with the intention of creating one of the most beautiful cities in Greece through the use of tree-lined boulevards and parklands. Visitors to the modern city are charmed by Sparta’s beauty and friendly people.
Sparta is the center of an agricultural plain whose focus is the Eurotas valley. It is the local center for the processing of goods such as citrus and olives. Its high quality extra virgin olive oil is recognized around the world as being of the highest quality.
